I just found a Sitepoint discussion from last summer that offers some profound insights on how to compare programming languages. It deserves to be summarized for easy reading.

sweatje: 1 Ruby probably costs more than the Python, though it could just eat the Ruby. Also, 1 Ruby is more expensive than 1 Pearl.
